How do I know if my anxiety is normal?
We all get anxious from time to time, especially when we are stressed, and this is normal. But an anxiety disorder is different. Anxiety disorders are conditions in which you have anxiety that does not go away and can get worse over time. The symptoms can interfere with your every day life including work, school and relationships.

Some signs you may be dealing with an anxiety disorder include:
-
Worrying more often than not, and ruminating over what might happen or what did happen
-
Restlessness, or tense muscles and jaw
-
Trouble making decisions
-
Feeling overwhelmed or even irritable
-
Sweating more easily or an increased heart rate

How I Approach Therapy for Anxiety

Anxiety is actually not in and of itself a bad thing. It's our body's natural alarm system, and it is there to let us know something is not right and that we are not safe. If we didn't have anxiety, we would not swerve to avoid a car in traffic, or dodge a flying object. However, it is when our body gets stuck an an anxious response, or becomes hypersensitive to the a perceived threat, that anxiety starts to create emotional distress instead of keeping us safe.

When we can work with our anxiety from a place of acceptance, we begin to see shifts in our response.

Anxiety is not just a distortion of the mind's ability to accurately perceive threat, it is a bodily response as well. Often the two work hand in hand to either escalate or de-escalate feelings of stress.
We will work with both your mind, using CBT and ACT to challenge automatic negative thoughts, and with your body, using breath work, movement and mindfulness to help calm and regulate your nervous system.
